Shore Fishing Safety

If you have been fishing before then you are probably already well aware of the risks that are associated with the sport. If you are not familiar with fishing then it may be a good idea to learn about the safety that is involved with it.

If you are already aware, then it never hurts to read over the tips and refresh your memory.

Being Aware

The first thing that you need to learn is to be aware of what is going on around you. Accidents usually happen when fishing because someone stopped paying attention to what was going on. With lines, lures, and rods flying all over the place you have to know what is going on at all times.

When you cast your line, look to see if there is anyone behind you or in your line of fire. This way you can avoid some accidents. I have seen some pretty bad incidents where fishermen have caught a lure in the lip and it is not pretty at all.

It's also a good idea to pay attention to what everyone else is doing as well. Most of the time accidents are caused by others who are not paying attention but if you are you can help reduce this risks and accidents.

Watch your Children

The second thing that you can do is watch your children and pay attention as to what they are doing. Young ones are usually accident prone so you are going to have to keep an eye on them.

Show them how to cast their line and reel in. Also tell them the basic safety rules and guidelines.
If you try to implement some of these fishing safety tips then you can help reduce the amount accidents that happen out on the lake.

Also, if you happen to see someone in trouble or hurt be sure to help them out. This way we can create good karma out there and help will keep going around. Be nice and considerate when fishing and dealing with others.

Fishing Adventure in Canada

Recreational fishing is one effective stress reliever. Other than the health benefits offered by low cholesterol fish protein, fishing gives an endorphin-like effect to the fisher which helps improve his mood and relieve stress. A good fisher should know the best place to go to start the adventure. It would also be best if you can find a place of rich resources where you don’t have to wait for a day to catch one fish. Otherwise, you will end up frustrated and stressed. In most temperate climates like in Canada, you can find a suitable place to fish and you can get it easy. Fishing enthusiasts know that the best destinations are the lakes and rivers in Canada.

Canada’s reputation as a renowned site for recreational fishing is incontestable. The country is dotted with thousand of lakes teeming with freshwater fish. Recreational fishing in Canada is regulated though. One has to have a license if he is over sixteen and has to be accompanied by a guide or adult if under sixteen. Professional hobbyists know that securing a license is nothing compared to the fun and thrill of catching salmon to walleye to steel heads, sturgeons, chisel mouths, basses, mullets, trouts, carps, perch, pike and a lot more.

A good number of lakes and rivers in Canada are perfect for recreational fishing like Lake Superior in Ontario. It is considered the largest lake on the place. Though it is a little bit saturated with commercial fishers, it will not hurt to try how great it is. Another lake is Huron which is perfect for enthusiasts who want to spend longer days fishing. There are communities in the area which offer services like rentals and guides. This place is also known for angler fishing. There is also the famous Lake Erie which is considered to be most productive because of its warm water. It is also known for its walleye fish. It’s also hard to forget about the smallest of the lakes, Lake Ontario, that seldom freezes during winter because of its depth.

If you are not going “big time”, Lake Nipigon is just located north of Lake Superior. It’s as perfect as the “big four” of the lakes. As the list of lakes continues, you can find choices like Lake Simcoe in Southern Ontario, Lake Sinclair, Great Slave Lake, Lake Okanagan, Lake Winnipeg, Lake Louise, Shuswap Lake, Mackenzie Lake and the Lake of the Woods. Of course, there are others to choose from. You can also choose to be in small rivers and ponds which are suitable for picnic and camping. Whichever place appeals to you, it is always worthwhile to try one in Canada.

Fishing in the Florida Panhandle - Offshore or Inshore, Its All Good

The Florida Panhandle offers some of the best fishing opportunities on the Gulf Coast. Species range from small sea trout to huge Blue Marlin well over a thousand pounds.

One of the contributing factors for the great fishing is the lack of development in the Panhandle. Clean water and a lack of polluted run off from a small population keeps estuaries and back water suitable for fish spawning and bait fish reproduction.

Another factor is the relatively close access to deep water compared to other areas on the Gulf Coast. The De Soto Canyon is a sharp drop into deep water that's famous for nearly world record Blue Marlin. The De Soto Canyon is only 95 miles from Destin Pass, 85 miles from Fort Walton Beach and 80 miles from Pensacola.

Other popular offshore species include Dolphin, also call Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, Sailfish, and Red Snapper. Most of those can be caught within 30 miles of shore, especially in the warm summer months.

Closer to shore, anglers will find Kingfish, Cobia, grouper and the occasional Tarpon. Spring fishing for Cobia, sometimes called ling by the locals, is some of the best in the country. Anglers fish close to shore, usually following bait pods of pilchards and threadfin herring. Boats have towers, used to spot the Cobia and rays that sometimes have Cobia following as the rays kick up crabs and other tasty morsels the Cobia feed on. When a ray is spotted the fishermen will sight-cast to the fish often with a live pilchard or a squid-tipped jig on their line.

But you don't need a boat; pier fishing from Cobia often yields results. Pier anglers will stand by the pier rails with rod in hand waiting for a Cobia to swim by then cast to the Cobia with a squid-tipped jig.

Pier fishing is very popular in the Florida Panhandle. The Pier at Pensacola Beach is a favorite, with plenty of parking and a place to eat. Fort Walton Beach Pier is not only great for fishing, but is next door to great food and entertainment. As the sun goes down, there are many places to experience the Panhandle nightlife also.

Pier fishermen usually target Pompano, Spanish Mackerel, Bluefish, Flounder, Sheep head, Black Drum, and Croakers. Most of the Panhandle beach piers have bait shops, complete with rods and reels for purchase or rent. Many also are willing to give their expert advice on which rigs to use and what bait has been working the best recently.

Fishing inside the bays and sounds on the Panhandle are also very productive. The usual catch includes Sea Trout, Redfish, Black Drum, and Founder. The Choctawhatchee Bay sound near Destin is a favorite spot as is St. Andrews Bay near Panama City Beach. Small flats boats are popular for those areas. Fishermen use both artificial and natural bait.

Charter boats for inshore, offshore and bay fishing are available throughout the Florida’s Panhandle and your won’t need a license. Florida residents don’t need a fishing license if they are fishing from land or a fixed structure such as a bridge or pier. Non-residents need a fishing license to fish anywhere except from a licensed charter boat with a vessel license.

When heading to the Florida you’ll find plenty to keep you busy. Whether its water sports, golf, boating, fishing or hanging out at Florida Panhandle Beaches, you’ll be find many activities to keep you busy.

Crawler Harness Walleye Fishing Secrets

Hi, Andrew Martinsen of Walleye Fishing Secrets here.

Crawler harnesses can be a very efficient way to catch Walleye, and these worm harnesses can help you keep your worm at the optimum level and keep the worm alive, so that the fish is tempted.

Walleye will not be attracted by dead worms, or worms that just hang in the water. A crawler harness will allow the crawler or worm to move naturally, without restricting the worm or causing severe damage to the worm which would affect how active the worm is in the water.

You can buy crawler harnesses at any tackle shop, or you can tie your own. With a little practice soon you will be able to tie your own crawler harnesses perfectly if you
prefer.

Tying your own harnesses can offer significant savings, plus you can make them exactly how you want them to be.

Once you have done it a few times you can have one of these rigs tied up in two minutes usually, and they cost around a dollar apiece to make. Crawler harnesses are not just for night crawlers.

These rigs can be customized to work with a wide variety of bait to attract Walleye, including leeches, plastic baits, minnows, and other worms and bait types.

Crawler harnesses can pull walleye out of rivers, lakes and more with not just crawlers, but other live baits as well. These harnesses will not hurt the bait being used,so that it will swim through the water naturally.

Using hooks with other methods and rigs can affect the movement and activity level of the bait, and this may be enough to keep the Walleye from biting.

A crawler harness can be trolled with bottom bouncers, snap weights, or in line weights, and all three of these methods can be quite effective at getting the attention of the noble Walleye.

Bottom bouncers used with a crawler harness can help you catch the Walleye which are hanging near the bottom but are not actually on the bottom of the water, because these rigs will bounce off of the bottom and attract Walleye suspended close to the bottom.

These bouncers also work well in areas where many rigs will end up getting snagged, and the bouncers will work better with fewer snags.

Bottom bouncers will also work well with beds of weeds, a favorite haunt of Walleye.
Combining a crawler harness and a bottom bouncer may be a great way to get all of the bites you could possibly want.

Do not let the harness or bouncer drag along the bottom, rather let it bump and float up a little, giving the bait a more natural and attractive movement to the fish.

A crawler harness can also prevent the loss of your bait by smart fish, because the bait is securely attached and can not be nibbled or pulled off.

Like with so many areas of walleye fishing, you may just want to be super-creative with your crawler harness and see what happens!

Walleye Fishing Planer Board Secrets

Planer boards can be a great way to increase your Walleye catch count.

Following these simple steps will allow you to set up and run these boards effectively when you are fishing for Walleye.

Planer boards will work well with boats both large and small.

Step 1: Determine The Size And Model Of Planer Boards To Be Used

The first thing to do is to determine what models and sizes of planer boards you will be using. There are models that range from one board to three, and they can come in widths that can be up to a foot wide for each board.

If there is more than one board or each board is six inches wide or bigger, the planer boards will run deeper unless the trolling speed is increased.

Planer boards should be running parallel to the boat while you are trolling, so choose the appropriate size and model to meet your needs.

The boards should not drag behind the boat because they lose effectiveness. Try to get the maximum spread with a distance from the boat of between seventy five feet and one hundred and twenty five feet.

Step 2: Attach The Planer Boards To The Boat

Once you have the proper size and model planer boards, the next step is to attach these boards to the boat and set them up properly.

Attach the running line for the planer board to the highest point of your boat, using planer board poles if you need to add height for this attachment.

Determine the number of lines you are going to troll, with a maximum of four unless otherwise restricted on the water you are fishing.

The line should be between one hundred and one hundred and fifty foot for each board, so that you can go out between seventy five feet and one hundred and twenty five feet.

Step 3: Attach The Fishing Rigs To The Line

When using boards, you want to target the top twenty five feet of the water column instead of trying to go deeper.

Let your trolling rig run out to the preferred distance, and then use a rubber band or Scotty clip to attach the trolling line to the running board line.

Once it is attached to the running line let out the reel line while leaving the clicker on.
Let the reel line out to a preferred distance on the running line, set the release on the reel, and then place the rod in the holder.

Make sure to set the lines from the outside in, so that the top lines will belong to the rods furthest out.

Follow this step for each line out, until you have the number of lines you want in the water.

After all the rods and boards are out, it is time to enjoy the Walleye fishing. Planer boards can truly be a great way to catch more Walleye.

Rules For Fishing For Catfish At night!

The sound of the tug boat chugging up the river, pushing heavily laden barges filled with grain, quieted the tree frogs and crickets that shared the night with me as I watched the tip of my catfish rod jerk feverishly.

After the initial tug on the line, all movement of my fishing pole stopped. I considered this for a moment and then decided to leave the bait where it was, if there was any left on the hook. It was too pleasant an evening to exert the energy it takes to pull the hook and sinker out of the river bed, re-bait and sling it back out into the deep dark water.

My brother, cousin and I were all sitting in our camp chairs as we listened to the night sounds resonating softly against the gently moving Tennessee River, halfway between Decatur and Huntsville, Alabama. The day had been blistering hot, but at 9:00 in the evening, the temperature was pleasantly cooled by a Southeasterly breeze up from the Gulf of Mexico.

In order to thoroughly enjoy a night fishing experience such as ours, it is imperative that one follow a few simple rules designed to make an evening fishing trip pleasant.

Let there be light! This is a must for night time fishing. Bring your camp lantern or a set of construction lights that operate off the cigarette lighter in your car. Stumbling around in the dark on the banks of a river or lake can be hazardous to your health.

Make sure that you are able to tolerate your fishing companions during stretches of fishing inactivity. Usually the best fishing companions are those who keep their mouths shut and enjoy the serenity of silence; but they’re hard to find.

With the advances in technology available today, it doesn’t make sense not to bring along a cell phone. Leave it in the car or truck to use in case of an emergency. Don’t be tempted to call someone simply to chat during a lull in the fishing action, unless you have just caught a whopper of a fish and want to brag a little to a friend.

Bring a good portable camp chair. Better still; a chaise lounge would be preferable for a relaxing evening. The only drawback to this is when reacting to a strike by a fish, it’s difficult to extricate yourself from the chair fast enough to set the hook. It can be embarrassing to fall on your face while the catch of the night is swimming down the river with your rod and reel in tow.

You will need a cooler, filled with ice, soft drinks and water. My years of experience in leisure activities have taught me that river water and alcoholic beverages just do not mix, whether you are sitting on the bank or fishing from a boat. My advice is to leave them at home.

Nothing works up an appetite like sitting in the dark on the bank of a river, chatting with pleasurable company about anything that comes to mind. Usually though, talk is confined to old fish stories about the big ones caught and the giants that got away. It makes you hungry!

No one really wants a sandwich when they’re fishing at night; they’re hungry for something more stable, like hot dogs. Charcoal is a must for cooking hot dogs. Unless you’ve brought along a camp stove, hamburgers or steaks are more trouble than they’re worth. Besides, the smell of catfish bait on your hands doesn’t seem to linger on hot dogs the way it does on fresh meat.

Remember to bring the bug spray! Unless the wind is blowing gnats, mosquitoes and other flying insects away from you, insect repellant is a must!

Last on the list of necessary equipment to take on an evening fishing trip are rods, reels, sinkers and hooks. Cat fish seem to like stinky baits so that’s what I use. When I was younger, I would fish with chicken liver, shad guts and any other bait that had been left out in the sun to ripen. Today I just go to one of the large tackle stores and buy prepackaged soft baits that smell just as bad as the ones I remember from my youth.

Fishing at night is fun. I’ve never claimed to be an expert in catching catfish, just an expert in fishing for them.

E21 Carrot Stix Fishing Rod Review

Fishing is very fun. I love to go fishing but I do not get to go as often as I would like. You know how it is, things like work and the every day things of life get in the way and you just do not have time to go fishing. That is just the way life is and you will just have to deal with it.

I am going to be talking about the E21 Carrot Stix and giving a little review on it and its features. This is a nice rod with a one piece design. The one peice designs make the rods stronger and that is what you want, a nice strong and durable rod.

Another feature that people like about this rod is the Velvet touch split grips. These grips help you to be able to detect even the slightest bite. You can even balance the weight on this rod which is just amazing. It sure is a full featured rod!

This rod has a Even stress distribution, meaning that the stress can be even distributed over the blank.

This rod is made of Cellulose Bio-Fiber blank material making this rod a real strong fish fighting rod for the professional or even un-experienced angler!

The E21 Carrot Stix fishing rod is also very very light. A light rod is perfect for hours of fishing. Holding a large heavy rod can sure get tiring after a while but rods like these, you might even forget this one is in your hand. This rod weighs just an amazing 3.2 ounces. Some of my big rods must weigh 4 pounds it seems.

The sensitivity is also amazing. It is said by many who use this rod that you can feel all the twitches of the lures and all the slightest bites from the fish. I think you would like this rod for that reason alone. A whole lot of other people are talking about that feature that is for sure.

This Rod is orange in color which is different from most. One thing that is really neat is that the rod fibers I talked about earlier, the Cellulose Bio-Fiber, is actual carrot fibers! It is said that the pole itself is made up of 70% of carrot fibers. I bet you had no idea the carrot could be turned into fibers to make such a strong and durable pole.

If you are looking to get your next super light, super strong fishing rod then be sure and get this one.I am sure you will like how it feels and how durable it is. Plus you can say your rod is made of carrots! How many of your friends can say that about their rods? The orange color is cool too!

At our shop fishing poles for sale, you’ll find reviews of fishing rods and deals on recommended fishing poles like the G Loomis GL2 rod.

Pike Fishing Tackle Checklist

So you have decided that you want to go out fishing for Pike. Here, I present you an essential checklist for an enjoyable day down at the waters edge. I will describe all the various pieces of tackle and other equipment you need for an enjoyable day.

Rod
The rod is the most obvious piece of kit needed for pike fishing. Pike rods are generally stronger than standard coarse rods. The reason for this is obvious; Pike tend to be heavier and stronger than your average coarse fish. Your rod needs to be able to deal with the extra strain these predators subject.

Reel
The reel is the component which allows you to store, cast and retrieve line. If it malfunctions, you won't be getting the line out there, if it malfunctions while the line is out then you can say goodbye to your pike as you will likely be cutting your line. This is not just bad for you but also very bad for the fish as the hook can trap its mouth causing the fish to starve to death.

Generally speaking, the more you spend on a reel, the better. Pike reels are also designed to carry the heavier line required for pike fishing. Which brings us to the line itself.

Line
As, hinted at a couple of times above, Pike are heavy, strong fish, Pike line must be strong enough to withstand the weight and fight of the fish. As such, Pike fishing line is generally braided making it much stronger than a single strand. Your local tackle shop will be able to discuss the various option and select the optimal line for the conditions, and your rod and reel.

Lures
Your choice of lures is the single most important factor in determining the success of your fishing session. If you employ poor lure selection, you won't be getting the bites. If you don't get the bites, you aren't going to be catching the fish. A successful lure depends on a huge number of factors from time of year, depth of the water body, habits of the fish, time of day and many many more. Pop into your local tackle shop and have a chat. A competent salesman will be able to take all of the variables and point you in the direction of the correct lure for your application.

Other Gear
Landing nets are advisable for getting the fish safely out of the water. Think about it. Would you like to be pulled out of the water solely by a hook in your mouth? Neither do fish, treat the fish with care and respect and they will be there to fish for years to come. Another fish care item is an unhooking mat, these mats keep the fish off the sometimes rocky banks, again protecting them.

If you have money to burn you can spend thousands on Pike tackle and there is something for almost every situation you may come across. Learn from your experiences and be equipped for the next time the situation arises.

The Friendly Fisherman, based in Tunbridge Wells, Kent has been in business since the early 80's. You can buy from a large selection of Pike fishing tackle in-store or in their online shop.

Pike Fishing Lures and Spinners

The purpose of pike lures and spinners is to imitate the appearance of a smaller prey fish moving through the water with the aim of the pike trying to take a bite out of it and hooking itself. Despite this fact, you will be surprised to learn that most of the time, these lures and spinners are at best a very distant resemblance. The pike do however go for these baits with much more frequency than those lures which are a spitting image of the prey.

The effectiveness of a pike lure is dependent on many things; weight, colour, lure action and the speed through the water which is governed by the angler.

There are a huge number of different pike lures on the market and there is good reason for this: There are many different things which factor into the fishes attraction in the bait. For instance a lure and technique which has the fish literally jumping onto the shore on a cold January day will probably not have the same results in the middle of a hot July summers day. It is not just temperature that must be taken into account. Time of day is a huge factor in your choice of lures. Think about it. You wouldn't want a steak and 6 beers for breakfast, and you probably wouldn't want a bowl of cornflakes for your dinner. Pike are the same, they are particular about what they eat and when they eat it.

As a general rule of thumb, the fish swim lower and slower the colder it is. In colder conditions, you should tailor your lures so that you are able to fish slowly on the bottom. The pike just don't have the energy or inclination to go zipping around after a torpedo shooting around at the surface when all the other fish around them are also slow and tired too, they are a much easier proposition.

Pike lures are generally cheap and readily available so you have no excuse not to have the right arsenal at the ready for whatever the conditions are on a particular day. Most are very durable so they can be taken by a lot of fish before they start to show any signs of wearing out.

Spinners get their name for the action they perform when pulled through the water. Shaped like a propeller, when given movement under water, the propeller like shape causes them to spin around themselves. The main advantage of spinners is that the reflections they give out when they are spinning are interpreted by the pike as the natural reflections from the prey fishes body which attracts them to bite.

YETI Coolers Keep Your Tailgate Party Chillin’

Tailgate parties have become popular in the United States as social gathering events that traditionally occur before, during and after sporting events, rock concerts and non-sports-related barbecues. The term, "tailgate" derives from the fact that the event is usually held on and around the open tailgate of a vehicle, in the parking lots of stadiums and arenas. People still participate even if their vehicles do not have tailgates. It has become the quintessential social event of any pre-game festivities and, what was originally an underground subculture, is now part of the mainstream sports atmosphere.

Tailgating traditionally involves the consumption of alcoholic beverages, such as beer or mixed drinks, and the grilling of various meats. Popular tailgating foods include picnic staples like hamburgers, hot dogs, baked beans, bratwurst, and potato salad. As the tradition continues to evolve, other meats and foods have added into the mix, such as steak, ribs, salsa, and fajitas. Unfortunately, the quality of ice coolers are inconsistent and a great tailgate party can quickly be soured by spoiling meat and warm beverages. It is imperative that you have an adequate amount of ice, cooler space and a quality cooler to keep all your food fresh and your drinks refreshing throughout the party.

YETI Coolers, a premier manufacturer of camping and marine coolers, offers a line of portable ice chests that are not only durable, but have been successfully certified as bear resistant by the Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee (IGBC). They are among the best insulated coolers on the market, with a full 2" or more of polyurethane insulation in the walls and lid at most sizes. Yeti also sports a freezer quality sealing gasket and one piece construction that gives them industry-leading ice retention. Yeti has designed the optimal ice cooler for any trip or picnic, ensuring the maximum ice retention available.

The Tundra Series, YETI's next generation cooler, is made with two inches of insulation in the body and three inches in the lid, the same type of material used to make river kayaks. They also employ freezer-style gaskets that help extend the freshness of food by boosting ice retention. These gaskets insure that the lid is properly secured, keeping the cold air in and the warm air out, allowing the ice do its job. Innovative features include heavy-duty T-Latches and self-stopping hinges that reinforce its overall super-durable design.

YETI Coolers also offers a line of portable ice chests that are the perfect size for personal tailgating needs. The YETI Roadie Series features the same composition and durability as the Tundra Series and is available in two sizes: 15 quart and 25 quart. The 15 quart dimensions are 17-1/2" in length, 12-3/8" in width, and 12-1/4" in height. Th 25 quart model's dimensions are 20-5/8" in length, 14-1/8" in width, and 13-1/2" in height. Both models are available in the colors of Desert Tan and YETI White, while the 25 quart model is also available in purple and gold.

Tailgate parties are a popular social event that brings people together throughout the year at sporting events, concerts, and barbecues across the nation. As the tradition continues to evolve, it is more important than ever to be prepared so that a good time is had by all, such as an adequate amount of ice, cooler space and a quality cooler to keep all your food fresh and your drinks refreshing throughout the party. Bear-Resistant YETI Tundra Coolers Won’t Stop Chillin’

Unless you are a grizzly bear, having an adequate portable ice chest or camping cooler is a necessity for any adventure into the wilderness. In addition to purchasing a camping cooler with adequate ice retention, it is important to choose one that is durable and reliable. Anyone experienced in the outdoors knows that ventures into nature can yield unpredictable, and often unfortunate events.  One of the biggest problems faced by avid campers is a way to keep their food safe from hungry and aggressive animals. The typical camping cooler is made of a thin plastic or styrofoam with one inch-thick lids and inadequate methods for a secure closure. This design flaw provides easy access for hungry animals who smell food to help themselves to your next meal. Not only will it ensure that your provisions will be secure from any predator, but it also prevents accidental bear feeding. Once a bear is fed, it will often come back to the camp, typically necessitating in the bear being destroyed.

YETI coolers, a premier manufacturer of camping and marine coolers, offers a line of portable ice chests that are not only durable, but are able to resist hungry attacks by the fiercest of predators. They are committed to providing the highest quality coolers for a broad range of activities. Whatever your outdoor adventure or commercial enterprise demands, they offer a cooler designed to suit your needs.

The Tundra Series, YETI's next generation cooler, is made with two inches of insulation in the body and three inches in the lid. The body of the cooler is the same type of material used to make tough river kayaks. The Tundra Series has a pad-lock mechanism, and when locked allows it is be successfully certified as bear resistant by the Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee (IGBC). The roto-molded one-piece casing will withstand the high impact of clawing, biting, thrashing, kicking, and cursing of any physical onslaught.  If you are still a doubter, visit their website, www.yeticoolers.com to view a short Bear vs. Yeti video.

YETI coolers also employ freezer-style gaskets that help extend the freshness of food by boosting ice retention. These gaskets insure that the lid is properly secured, keeping the cold air in and the warm air out, allowing the ice do its job. Innovative features include heavy-duty T-Latches and self-stopping hinges that reinforce its overall super-durable design.

YETI Tundra Series coolers are known for their durability and ice-retention qualities. They are the preferred choice amongst avid campers and boaters to keep food and libations chilled, while keeping aggressive animals out. YETI coolers are made from highly durable material that will ensure its contents' freshness and safety. As any camper can attest, it is essential to have adequate provisions while enjoying the great outdoors. The YETI Tundra Series will keep items safe for consumption while keeping animals, even hungry bears, out of your cooler.

Maximize Ice Retention with Yeti Coolers

The fundamental purpose for using an ice chest, or cooler, is to extend the life of perishable items and goods with ice to ensure their consumption at any given time. The performance of an ice cooler is vital for any camping trip, road trip, or picnic, and does not always provide adequate capacity or ice retention. Unfortunately, not all coolers are created equal. Some are made of styrofoam or plastic and built to fulfill only the basic requirements of a casual user. In fact, the majority of coolers on the market leave much to be desired for anyone looking for one that does what it should do best: maximize the retention of ice. Yeti Coolers are very strong and tough coolers that are known for their superior quality and bear-resistant durability. But another benefit that sets them apart from the rest of the industry is their outstanding thermal properties.

Yeti coolers are among the best insulated coolers on the market, with a full 2" or more of polyurethane insulation in the walls and lid at most sizes. Yeti also sports a freezer quality sealing gasket and one piece construction that gives them industry-leading ice retention. Yeti has designed the optimal ice cooler for any trip or picnic, ensuring the maximum ice retention available. However, this isn't a one-way relationship. There are several tips you can execute to maximize the performance of your cooler.

The art of insulation works both ways, retaining heat as well as cold. For this reason, you should always store your cooler in a cool environment before loading it with ice. If stored directly in the sun or in a hot environment, nature will win and the ice will melt. In extreme cases, people pre-chill their coolers in freezers. The temperature of the ice is also crucial. The colder the ice is when it is loaded in the cooler, the longer the ice will last. Another solution that is often overlooked is the chilling or freezing of food, prior to loading up the cooler. Warm or room temperature food requires more energy to cool and will melt the ice faster, no matter how insulated the cooler is.

The amount of ice used is also important, the more the better. Large pockets of air in the cooler will cause the ice to melt faster. If you are concerned about the weight, you can use towels or newspaper to fill the voids of air. Surface area to volume of the ice also affects melting speed. Block ice will melt much slower, but smaller pieces of ice chill the cooler faster. The ideal situation is to cover the bottom of the cooler with a block of ice, then put the food in and fill in the rest of the space with cube ice. Once the cooler is being used, do not empty out any of the cold water. The cold water will only help insulate the remaining ice and items. If you are still having trouble with ice melt, look into using dry ice, which has a longer life span.

There are various other factors that can affect ice retention: how often you open the lid, storage location, weather, and other environmental variables. Ice coolers are an important dynamic of any trip away from the comforts of society. If you pay careful attention to these extra steps in maximizing ice retention, and take advantage of the thermal properties of Yeti coolers, you will be the envy of any trip or picnic.

Don’t Let Your Partner Bring Their Shimano Curado 200 E7 Fishing Reel

As a serious fisherman, one of my true pleasures is fishing from my boat.  I'm the captain of my ship.  I decide where we're going to fish, for how long, and most importantly, I get first shot at all the choice fishing cover.  Every fisherman that sits up front usually tries to give their partner in the back access to some fresh water.

Let's face it, you drove, you shelled out the $40,000 for a top of the line bass boat.  You are darn right; I'm casting first at that log lying majestically in the water.  That log is calling me.  I know, the log knows, and even the bass knows he's about to be mine.

I've eyed up my target.  I'm just about ready to launch the perfect cast just past my target when all of the sudden….I hear the blades of a spinnerbait come within an inch of my ear from the back of the boat.  I turn around to look and my partner has just launched a cast almost straight down the length of my boat and right to my picture perfect log.

If you ever watched the television show, Ultimate Match Fishing, you know that cast deserves a penalty just like on the show.  However, we're out fun fishing.  No penalties can be assessed, just utter disbelief.

Now once I've cooled down and forced to take a picture of his lunker, that should have been mine, I started trying to figure out how he cast a so far.  He's 20 feet behind me and I thought I had him out of range.  Then it hit me.  I looked at his reel.  It was this shiny new greenish Shimano Curado 200 E7.  I'm using the Shimano Curado 100D, a very fine reel, however, I was out gunned.

After the day was over, I started researching this new edition from Shimano.  The Curado 200 E7 has a much larger spool allowing more line capacity.  Also, the Shimano Curado 200 E7 has a 7:1 retrieve ratio.  My Curado 100D only has a 6.3:1.  My partner was casting farther and reeling in his casts faster, hence, getting in many more casts than me.

As captain of my ship I have a new policy in place.  No Shimano Curado 200 E7 reels allowed…except for the eight of them I now own!

Gone Camping - Fraser Island QLD

What is it which makes an otherwise sensible family leave a modern home in the suburbs with all its mod-cons and substitute it all for a canvas roof, leaky airbeds, camp stove and dig-your-own toilet?
I guess there are many reasons depending upon the individual - all of the cliches; getting back to nature, bonding with the kids, the adventure or perhaps, just to prove that you can survive without the cyclic defrost fridge, or the VCR.

The fact is that if you want to experience some of our best unspoiled parts of Australia, you have to consider camping. That’s because these great places are often accessible only by camping.
Also from a fishing point of view the increasing pressures on our fisheries means we are often seeking out the same remote places. So it’s not surprising camping and trailer boat fishing often go hand in hand.

Certainly towing a boat can restrict some of the areas you can safely access, however you can still get off the beaten track and stay there for some time.
Having said that, the trailer boat can be a restriction. For example we recently took the TBF Edge tracker up to Fraser Island for a week of camping and during that time covered much of the island, often with the boat fully laden.

We ran into trouble only once and that was trying to negotiate a very steep and soft exit from the beach. After traveling many hundreds of kilometers on mainly soft sand tracks towing a trailer with small diameter, narrow wheels and next to no clearance was a challenge. However, despite that it’s amazing where you can get to with a little care and patience.
One huge advantage of taking a boat is it allows you to carry the extra gear which makes the trip all that more enjoyable.

Be Well Prepared:

Whatever the reasons, there is a real thrill and loads of pleasure to be derived from camping. However, I also have to add that there is a difference between camping and roughing it.
A few creature comforts are almost essential to a successful and enjoyable camping trip, especially if it involves the whole family.

Kids really enjoy the experience and the freedom of being outdoors and they can learn much from the experience. Even getting involved in the daily chores is more appealing than it is back at home.
My very first camping experience is still indelibly etched into my mind - it was without doubt the most miserable, uncomfortable, generally unpleasant night that I have ever spent. At the age of 10, I had just joined the Boy Scouts and we all know their motto of “Be Prepared”. Well, I wasn’t! I didn’t have a sleeping bag or ground sheet, just a couple of blankets and in the torrential downpour of that night, the tent took in water in astonishing quantities and deposited it all on me, regardless of where within the tent I moved.

It wasn’t a great experience for the others either, but because they had the right gear they did remain comparatively warm and dry.
Overall it was a good lesson. Sometimes, even with the best of plans and intentions, things can still go terribly awry and having the appropriate gear can see you through it with less discomfort.
Be warned though, sooner or later it will happen - the unforeseen southerly buster accompanied by the sudden appearance of animals lining up two by two!

A few years ago at Port Campbell in South Australia we were literally blown away when a violent storm with gale-force winds hit during the night. The travelling tent that we were using on that trip was simply not up to the task of withstanding wind strengths over 100 kph.
Very few tents would have survived this gale to be fair, but I believe we would have had a better chance in a modern dome style. We at least found out just how quickly we could pack up the site, or rather what was left of it.

Fishing with Electronics

Ever seen electronic devices on the boat to help locate fish? That tool is called a fish finder; an electronic device that locates fish in the vicinity like a global positioning system (GPS) locates places. Why are portable fish finders so valuable? They can determine whether or not the fish could bite in the vicinity an angler is fishing at. Fishing at the dock, lakes, and bays can require patience to determine if fish will bite because sometimes fish are just not in the area despite using good fishing technique and bait. A portable fish finder also can determine the size of the fish that is displayed on the fish finder screen.

The first things needed to go fishing are fishing rods and bait that should work to catch the fish an angler is looking to catch. When fish are not biting, usually the thing that is required before fish bite again is patience unless if the bait is not the right choice. Patience may not pay off as some anglers are not willing to or do not have enough time to wait for many hours before any potential for results to come through. With an electronic portable fish finder, an angler can determine if it is possible for fish to bite. If there are no bites despite seeing fish on the fish finder display, deciding on the adjustments to make becomes the next step. Sometimes the answer is patience; sometimes the answer is new bait or fishing technique. Without a fish finder, it is harder to predict why the fish are not biting or whether or not patience is needed.

Predicting where to fish becomes easier by having a portable fish finder on fishing trips at lake cabins. When anglers give up and go to a different area of the lake to fish, sometimes it is a wrong decision to end patience. It is a good decision if no fish are underwater, but guessing games would have to be played without an electronic fish finder. It is truly hard to predict where fish may be spotted at times, so when the intent is to have good days without as much of a risk of a bad day; it is great to have a portable fish finder if you fish at lakes off the boat and dock.

Fishing Tips

HI TO ALL ANGLERS.
I have decided to do something radical and give away for free, valuable information gained from many years experience and countless hour upon hour of hard earned knowledge.
I caught my first fish at the age of 3 years and for the next 30+ years i spent my life on the water both professionally and recreationally.I am an Aussie and have caught just about every type of fish of every size found around the Aussie coastline.I am prepared to share my know-how with whoever is interested. These are genuine tips,I know they work,I have caught all my fish using the tips and tecniques as described.
             READ.USE.LEARN.ENJOY.
                                  TIGHT LINES.
WEATHER:I have fished through all sorts of weather from Hot,Cold,Windy,Storms,Rain and found as long as the barometer is staying still or rising the weather only worries the fisherman not the fish.
BAROMETER:It won't matter where you are fishing lakes,Rivers,Oceans a rising barometer is always best.A falling barometer will slow fishing down in some cases it will stop fish feeding altogether.
TIDES:Play a key role in fishing,Depending on what species you are after depends on what tide you fish.
BEACH FISHING: Mulloway and ,sharks like the last of the run in  tide and high water.
Tailor, andSalmon like the run in tide.
Whiting,Bream,Dart,Flathead like low water and the first of the run in tide.
RIVER FISHING: Mangrove Jack,,Bream,Whiting,Tailor,Treavelly,Grunter,Salmon  all llike a run in tide.
Mulloway:Likes likes low water   and first of run in tide
Flathead like a run out tide..
BAY FISHING:Squid,Gummy sharks,Snapper,Whiting like the run in tide.
OFFSHORE FISHING:Snapper,Jewfish,Marlin like a tide change high or low.
Reef fish,Tailor,,Mackeral,Yellowtail kingfish,Sampson fish,Amberjack,Pearl Perch, like a run in tide..Sharks,Cobia,Wahoo like the last of a run out tide.
MOON PHASES:I believe the new moon through to 2 nights before the full are the best time for fishing and I won't start fishing again until 2 nights after the full. Then I will fish right through until the next full moon.THE reason is I  believe, over the full there is too much current! The full moon usually means king tides which means lots off current for some reason shuts the fish down.Maybe the extra water is cooler which stops the fish feeding?Whatever the reason! The 4 nights around the full moon are good nights to stay home and watch fishing movies. The falling moon isn't a bad time to go fishing because the current is slowing down after the full,The fish start coming back on the chew.Things are a bit slow but with some patience you will get a feed. The dark moon is pretty much the same as the falling moon ,,things are a bit slow with next to no current and very small tides with patience you will get a feed. The rising moon,Let the fun begin, the current starts to move, the fish start to feed, now is the time to go and catch
that big one.
SNAPPER:Fish late afternoons or early mornings even night time an hour each side of a tide change.Fish the reef ledges using baitrunner and baitcaster reels,4 to 10 kg line,5/0 snelled hooks floatlining with a lumo bead & head half of Slimy mac or Yakka.
MULLOWAY:Fish late afternoon or night time, fish deep holes, bridge pylons, rock walls and river mouths.Fish the first of the run in tide and both tide changes.Use overhead reels,5/0 to 8/0 hooks,10 to 15 kg line, use live bait or very fresh dead bait.
BLACK JEW:Use a bottom bashing rig, fish the inshore reefs in 20′c + water temp.10 to 30 meters of water around pinnacles is best.Use 6/0 to 8/0 hooks,15 kg line and fresh fish fillets are best bait.
COBIA:Fish night time using the last of the run out tide with live bait fishing the inshore reefs.Troll live bait on a down rigger,6 to 15 kg line with 5/0 to 8/0 hooks, use fresh or live bait and fish around bait schools, wrecks and reefs that hold bait schools.
WAHOO:Fish the last of the run out tide, use overhead reels,8 to 15 kg line.Troll a live tuna (bonito) on a short wire trace over summer.
MACKERAL:Fish run in tide in early morning or late afternoon, slow troll garfish, bonito or ribbon fish on a down rigger.Use 6 to 15 kg line and a short wire trace.
DOLPIN FISH:Troll skirted lures and live bait,8 to 15 kg line,5/0 to 8/0 hooks, troll around tide lines and floating debris.
TUNA:Fish deep blue water around 23′c for yellowfin and bigeye and 18′c for southern blues.Fish night time with fresh squid and blue light sticks.Best to fish the new moon, use 15 to 24 kg line and 8/0 to 10/0 hooks.
BROADBILL:Fish the seamounts and contour lines with a falling moon in water 18′c to 21′c at night time.Use fresh squid,10/0 to 12/0 hooks,24 to 36 kg line with green light sticks,Best to fish winter using live snapper.
REEF FISH. I tend to chase mixed reef fish over flat ground with a fern,y bottom, over the dark moon, and running up to the full on top of shoals.,the best for big reds and scarlet Perch.. The reason being with less tide I find the fish like to move around and graze. When fishing around the full moon you will find the fish around structures such as bommies and ledges because the fish will be hiding to get out of the current.. ,as the moon falls, you can start fishing the deeper water where the fish will star grazing again. only fish a couple hours each side of the tide change for best results.Fresh squid best bait for all reef fish.
RED EMPEROR: Fish nighttime over the new moon with a run out tide in 30 to 40 mtr water depth of 22′. Use overhead reel, 15 to 24 kg line and 5/0 to 8/0 hooks.use bottom bashing rigs and fish shoals. Fresh Husser is best bait.
SCARLETT SEA PERCH; Fish reefs on a run in tide. Go bottom bashing using fresh bait of squid or pillies. Fish 40 to 80 mtrs of water at night., with 10 to 15 kg line with 4/0 to 7/0 hooks.
CORAL TROUT; Fish in 23′ or warmer water, floatlining. Small fresh trout is best bait for big trout , allow to float onto reef. Use a good 9/0 longshanked hook and 15 kg line.
ROSY JOBFISH; Use bottom bashing rig, 15 to 24 kg line and 6/0 to 8/0 hooks, fish run in tide in 40 to 120 mtrs of water with overhead reel. Fresh squid is best bait and water temp should be over 20′c.
RED THROAT EMPEROR: Go bottom bashing with fresh squid or pillies as your best bait. Use 4/0 to 6/0 hooks on 10 to 15 kg line, allow to drift onto reef.
SWEETLIP; Bottom bashing in 20 to 30 mtrs of water over reef with a run in tide. Use freshbait at night time for best results, with 5/0 hooks.
MANGROVE JACK; Fish during summer time at low tide at the first of run in along rock walls and structure. Use live bait and 4/0 to 6/0 hooks on 10 to 15 kg line.
