Tips and techniques for ice fishing safety

Falling through thin ice kills many people every year. Knowing the conditions and thickness of the ice can save your life or the life of someone close. Anglers and ice fishers rely on it during winter to support their entire fishing site. Sometimes houses can be pulled onto the ice for shelter. In these situations knowledge of ice thickness
will definitely save your life.

Beware of snow covered ice because the snow insulates the ice which prevents solid ice creation. Snow covered ice also makes it difficult to accurately check thickness. Stay away from cracks, pressure ridges, slushy, cracked or darker areas. Ice that forms around partially submerged objects such as trees, brush, embankments is usually thinner and prone to breaking.

It is always a good idea for ice fishers and anglers to drill test holes as they go further out onto the lake. This is because ice can vary in thickness from one part of the lake to the other. Daily changes in temperature can cause ice to contract and expand so be sure to ask around in bait shops or with locals before you venture out.

There is a guide to know how thick the ice has to be before you set out. Four inches of ice is okay for a group of people walking single file, six inches for snowmobiles and ATV’s, twelve inches for an automobile and fifteen inches for a pickup truck or SUV. During the early winter it is advised to double these figures.

When you are not sure of the ice you should also be wearing a personal floatation device and carry a cellphone. A set of ice picks to pull yourself onto the ice will come in handy if you fall through.

If someone falls through be sure to act quickly by calling 911 or the equivalent in your area. Never go near the victim that has fallen through the ice. Try to reach the victim with a long pole, a rope, or something long. If you can’t do that, throw the victim a life jacket or any kind of buoyant object that you can find. Only go to the victim if you can’t do any thing else, do this by forming a human chain where everyone lies down and grabs the person in fronts ankles.

During winter conditions, hypothermia can set in very quickly. You can treat this by removing the victims wet clothing and replacing it with dry clothing. If you have one available, you can put the victim in a sleeping bag. Immediately take them to the hospital for further treatment.

With this knowledge you can have a safer trip and possibly save someones life in the process.

Fall Topwater Bass Fishing!

I have to say, I’m a sucker for a good day of topwater fishing. To me theres nothing better then waking up in the morning and seeing winds at 5 km per hour and knowing the lake or river is going to be glass.

I may even be a topwater fanatic to a fault, always looking for that next big strike, fiending for it, not wanting to give up or change tactics until I get my fix. I can spend 6 hours casting the same bait in the same lake without a hit and still be hopeful because I know sooner or later I’m going to see a splash, feel a strike and see that beautiful fish break the surface and dance across the water like gravity was non existent.

But what makes topwater fishing effective? What can we do to ensure more hits and more landed fish? Here is what I’ve noticed in my recent experiences. Natural colors, enough said, nothing beats them. When I pick up a lure like a scumfrog, hula popper, jitter bug or chug bug I always make sure to get the darker more realistic colors. I have about 10 hula poppers ranging from light green to white and red, using them all equally I’ve noticed I’ve never caught anything on one that wasnt “natural”.

When I hit the lake or the river and I have my scumfrog, jitter bug and hoola popper I know its going to be a good day. For example I was fishing muskrat river a few days ago tossing everything in my box just to see what would stir up a strike, after getting nothing for about an hour I decided to talk to a local fishing the other banks, he said “Topwater hasn’t been working all year!”, but me being as stubborn as everyone knows I can be I started tossing that scumfrog right to the edge of the cover, within a few casts, FISH ON!

Now that may not always be the case and I do vouch for natural colors but every decent fisherman knows to coordinate your bait with the conditions. Clear water or natural cover I’ll always toss greens, browns or sometimes even blacks. Darker water or over cast days I’ll experiment with my whites, yellows and reds.

Just be aware of the conditions and you cant go wrong, even if you dont land a lunker nothing beats a good day on the water.

Chesapeake Bay Saltwater Techniques - Charter Boats, Fishing Piers and More

Anglers fishing in the Chesapeake Bay might choose to fish from charter boats, piers, inlets, bridges, or along the shoreline. The wide variety of saltwater fishing locations throughout the bay allows anglers of any age, sex or physical condition a chance to enjoy the sport.

Charter boats are popular options in most saltwater fishing areas. A good local charter boat will provide anglers with a safe, enjoyable experience. Charter boats are typically larger than private boats and can usually accommodate 6 or more anglers. Most Chesapeake Bay fishing charter boats are available from early spring thru December.

Especially popular with Chesapeake Bay anglers are fishing charter trips for striped bass, also known as rockfish. These fish can be very large and are often found in large schools. Once the striped bass season closes in the Chesapeake Bay, Virginia Beach fishing charter boats are able to continue fishing in the nearby coastal waters.

Pier fishing is very popular in parts of the bay. Beginners will feel very much at ease and many piers have a family atmosphere and lots of people willing to help each other learn. Pier fishing tackle is inexpensive and simple to use. Common items to bring on a pier trip might include a cooler, ice, drinks, snacks, sunblock, insect repellent, knife, bait, rags, pliers, rod and reels, tackle, and a camera. It’s a good idea to use a pier fishing cart to transport all this gear onto the pier.

Calling ahead to commercial piers is one way to find out where fish are biting. Anglers can also check regional websites for pier fishing reports and tips. Several Virginia fishing piers are found in the lower Chesapeake Bay, many in the Hampton Roads area.

Shoreline fishing can be very productive in the Chesapeake Bay. Depending on the season, location and species targeted, anglers may fish with one or several types of cut baits, live baits or with artificial lures. Anglers use light rods and spinning or conventional reels and often carry sand spikes to hold the rods and a cooler on wheels called a fishing buggy. Chesapeake anglers fishing from the shoreline catch rockfish, croaker, white perch, spot, trout, drum fish, catfish and other species.

Some anglers catching their own live baits for fishing in the Chesapeake Bay. Popular bait catching equipment includes cast nets, sabiki rigs, seines, dip nets, minnow and fish traps and umbrella nets. These options allow anglers to catch live bait such as shrimp, crabs, squid, silversides, glass minnows, mummichugs, spot, pinfish, pigfish, ballyhoo, herring, shad, eels and other small fish suitable a live baits or to store or use immediately as fresh baits.

The author writes for outdoor websites including Virginia Beach Virginia, Hampton Roads Virginia and Chesapeake Bay Charter Boats.

Fishing – A Beginners Glossary Part 1

The basic concept of fishing is fairly basic and self explanatory. Fishing is the act of catching fish. Or my particular favourite dictionary definition for fishing is, "the diversion of catching fish!" I am not sure whether they mean a diversion for the angler from their regular day to day life or the act of diverting the fish onto the hook or into a net!

As with any transaction there are usually two parties involved. In this case we have the fisherman or fisherwoman as the "fish-er" and the fish, would logically, to me at least, be the "fish-ee".

What about some of the terms we hear regarding fishing though? To the uninitiated it can sound like a load of old trout!

Ok here is a really easy one to kick off with:

1. Fish type/species followed by the word "fishing"- For example, carp, bass or trout and the word fishing, e.g. carp fishing. This really is as simple as it sounds. Fishing for a particular species of fish which in this case is carp.

2. Fishing Tackle – This is not some illegal challenge in football or soccer but in fact the equipment that is used for fishing. There is a large variety of fishing tackle available and much of it can be specialised, e.g. carp fishing tackle. Yes you guessed it, the fishing tackle used to try and catch carp.

3. Coarse Fishing This is not fishing on a golf course (notice the subtle spelling difference) or any kind of course for that matter. It is in fact the name given to fishing (usually in the United Kingdom) for freshwater fish that are not considered game fish which are trout, salmon and char. Once again, carp is a common target for coarse fishers.

4. Fly Fishing – Fishing whilst flying would be really difficult and probably very dangerous, so that's not what this is. Fly fishing is actually fishing with a very special kind of bait, an artificial fly. Yes a fake fly! The fishers use all kinds of fake fly, different sizes, different colours and the aim is to lure the fish with this unique bait.

5. Fishing Bait - Theoretically you could fish without much of the modern fishing tackle as I am sure they did in ages past, with just a sharp spear and an even sharper aim! However, whoever first came up with the idea of luring the fish with some kind of bait was clearly a genius. Fishing is now much easier than it ever was, with all kinds of bait available for all kinds of different fish and different fishing conditions.

This concludes part one of our "Beginners Fishing Glossary". Tune in soon for part 2, when we will have a look at Sea Fishing, Bass Fishing and perhaps even the legend that is J R Hartley.

If this has whetted your appetite for fishing then please feel free to visit the North West Angling Centre, a massive fishing superstore at www.nwac.co.uk stocking huge amounts of fishing tackle including carp fishing tackle.

Importance of Using Bait Boats

Are you planning to try and use bait boats? If so , it is important that you learn the way to properly utilize them. Here is a look at some of the finest tips out there which will help you to use bait boats effectively .

The first thing you want to do is start setting up your bait boats. You can find the area where you need to put this bait by trying a market float. This way you can ensure that the area you use is going to be free from snags that may have a problem. When you have done this, then you are prepared for the very next step.

The following step for using bait boats is to put the ship on the unhooking mat that you have so it will be protected. Your rig can be pulled in from under the mat. You can place in as much bait as you think you need. Try to make certain that your lead and hook is straight too so that it doesn’t get twisted or tangled up.

You will need to have some bank sticks set up when you are taking out the bait boats. This way you can make sure that the wind doesn’t take out your line and this way you keep the rod in the same position all of the time.

When it is time to take out the bait boats, ensure you go out towards the marker float that you have. Try to keep the line very tight so that there is no slack. Wait till you are feeling the lead hit the bottom and then you can pull in the slack in the line, but ensure you don’t move the hook away from all the bait that you have down there.

You can use more than one rig when you are dealing with bait boats too. However, some people think that they are best to only use one rig so they don’t get all tangled up with the bait boat or with another rig.

When you go to put bait boats out again, ensure that there are no weeds causing a difficulty. It’s also a good idea to make certain that nobody takes your ship. It can be quite dear, so you need to keep it out of the way if you want. It’s a great idea to take them with you at night to make certain no one takes them from you.

Bait boats may be employed very well if you be aware of what you are doing, but they are not the best things to use. Also they are pretty expensive, so you need to make sure you will know what you are doing before you decide to purchase and get through bait boats for yourself.

Choosing the great Baitcasting Rods

Are you brand new to fishing? If this is the case you’ll need to buy one of the many baitcasting rods out there. Fishing can be a ton of fun, nevertheless without the exact baitcasting rods, you might not think it all that thrilling. With the right rod, you can make sure that you get fun and really catch fish. Here are some options for newbies when selecting rods.

When selecting baitcasting rods for newbs, the rod that is chosen needs to be robust and durable. You need to be ready to deal with any catch when you purchase a pole. In fact , you do not want to catch just small fish. You most likely want to catch the biggest fish possible with your rod, so a robust rod is vital.

Baitcasting rods have reels that are above the particular pool and there are rings on the line and the guides are on top of the pool as well . You use a special trigger on the rod so that even when releasing the line, you’ve a great grip on the pole. This is one of the easier options for folk just beginning to fish.

Graphite is one of the finest material choices when you’re selecting baitcasting rods for newbs. These rods are really light and they’re straightforward for you to control too. If you are only starting out, then it is a smart idea to pick a pole that is made from graphite, since you’ll find it simpler to use until you improve at fishing.

Of course, there also are some baitcasting rods that are made of both graphite and fiberglass. These rods can also be a extremely rather good choice for amateurs who are fishing for the 1st time. These rods are powerful, sturdy, very light, and they’re straightforward to afford too.

So you may be wondering where you can look for good baitcasting rods. A sporting products store is one place where you may be in a position to find these rods. However, one of the finest places to find them is online. It is easy to find different options on the web when it comes to these rods, which gives you a huge choice to select from.

frequently the prices are the best online when you are purchasing baitcasting rods too. Because the interest is so competitive, often the prices are the best there. You may look around and compare prices to find out which rod is going to fit best into the price range you have in mind.

Fishing is an enjoyable pastime, and if you are just getting started, baitcasting rods will be a crucial option. With a best rod, you can have fun, catch fish, and start to improve at fishing. Later on you may want to go with extra complicated baitcasting rods, except for now it’s best to start out with rods that are straightforward to use.

Andrew Martinsen's Walleye Fishing Secret Weapon: Reef Runners

Hi, Andrew Martinsen from Walleye Fishing Secrets here.

Walleye fishing success and Reef Runners can go hand in hand, and these baits can be used as your Secret Weapon.

Reef Runners come in a wide variety of sizes, colors, and intended depths, and some of these varieties are perfect for catching Walleye in more than one season normally.

These lures are very versatile, with some for every situation and circumstance.

For instance, there is the Reef Runner Ripstick 900 series. This lure is seven inches long, and comes in a rainbow of colors and designs.

The Ripstick 900 works great for Walleye, and some of the varieties that the fish seem to really hit in on many temperatures and weather conditions include the Firetiger, Bare Naked, Pink Lemonade, Perch, and Mooneye Minnow.

The Gold Prism and Orange Black Dots varieties work very well for catching Walleye in darker or murky waters that have little clarity.

But of course let's not forget The Reef Runner Deep Diver 800 series!

The colorful Kryptonite really attracts the Walleye when the water is not clear, and the black and white Dr. Dreadful will definitely get the attention of the fish.

The Perch and the Cheap Sunglasses varieties are both very vividly colored, and are sure to attract hungry Walleye.

But Wait, There's More!

As you can see, this lure is like a literal smorgasboard for the Walleye.

There are other varieties of Reef Runner that also work very well at catching Walleye.

Two of these are the Reef Runner Little Ripper five hundred series and the Reef Runner Deep Little Ripper six hundred series.

Both of these lures come in a large number of designs and colors, making them great for all seasons and bodies of water.

The deep little ripper version is intended for deeper fishing, but they both are excellent at catching Walleye.

The Grey Ghost is a great choice for water that is clear and days which are sunny or bright.

The neutral gray shine will reflect light and get the attention of the fish without being to flashy or colorful.

On days when the light levels are low the Wild Thing Huckleberry or the Metallic Trout version may be a better choice, because the bright colors will really stand out well in even the darkest of waters.

The Eriedescent is also very popular with Walleye anglers, because this lure works at times when even other Reef Runner lures do not seem to be of interest.

The Reef Runner Rip Shad is also an excellent choice for Walleye, whether you choose the two hundred or four hundred series. The only real difference is the size of the lure.

The Purple Prism version of this lure can bring in tremendous results.

For lighter or clearer conditions, the Chrome and Black or the Black Prism may have a better chance of success.

No matter what color, size, or depth you want in a lure, you will find it in a Reef Runner. And that comes straight from the heart.

Andrew Martinsen is a walleye fishing fanatic. His Walleye Fishing Secrets course has helped anglers across North America catch more walleye and bigger walleye. Find out more about Andrew Martinsen’s Walleye Fishing Secrets program right now while it’s still available.

Late Summer North Idaho Smallmouth

8/3/2009

With August quickly approaching, we are certainly in the dog days of summer. It's easy to head out to the lake and cast out hundreds of times pulling nothing out but weeds or 4 oz fish. Now is the time to think…DEEP. Due to the increasing water temp, it is important to press out to 25-30 feet deep. It is here where you will find the lunker you are looking for.

Currently, Smallmouth Bass in Northern Idaho Lakes such as Lake Coeur d'Alene (particularly Cougar Bay and the Chain Lakes area), Hayden, Cocolalla, Preist, and Pond Oreille are hitting Twin Tail Grubs on a football jig bounced on the bottom. Colors such as cinnamon with black fleck, or smoke with black fleck are garnering bites. Work a bounce and slow retrieve motion, and don't be afraid to let it rest on the bottom for 3-4 seconds at a time. In stained water, stick to chartreuse or white. Make sure to lookout for long points, or changes from rocky shoreline to sand. Finally, look for drop offs of 7-8 feet or more. These drop-offs will generally hold bass throughout the late summer pattern.

Finally, Smallmouth Bass love rocks and boulders. Take the time to know your lake floor. Look for easy access routes to cover or deeper water. Most of all, vary your retrieve pattern until you find the one that gets the aggressive bites. Remember, a slow day on the lake is better than a good day at work. So take your time, have fun, and land that lunker Smallmouth.

As the co-author of www.hungryhook.com, we are working to build the Northwest’s #1 fishing site. We accept submissions from fishermen of all expertise from across the country, and give them the ability to promote their own fishing tips and products.

How to clean a fishing reel

It can be a labourious task to clean a fishing reel and ensure that you maintain it after each trip. However, most fishing reel faults can be put down to the fact that it was not cleaned properly and now has corroded parts or instead underperforms. This is an anglers most frustrating problem.

Preparing your fishing trip however should incorporate a full cleanse of your tackle and equipment, and the most important aspect of them is the reel. A good reel should last you for a long time due to the quality construction, however, like any mechanical device it also needs to be looked after.

There are however, a few things you can do in order to keep your reel in tip-top shape.

After you have removed the reel from the rod, you will need to take the handle off - these usually have a reverse locking system so you just need to unwind it. Next, with a damp cloth, wipe over the visible areas of the reel - make sure the water is clean and not salt water as this will corrode the components.

Depending on the reel you have you will then need to remove the sideplate. Some of the unclip, or unwind while others are screwed in place - you should consult the manual if you are unsure. To clean the inside of the reel, remove any dirt with a swab and be sure to get out any other debris.

Apply some bearing grease, or WD40 to the bearings and gears while you are inside as well to keep them fresh as this is one of the main causes of reel failure. Once you are done it is safe to put the reel back together again. You should finally give the handle a good wash as this is likely to have water, bait and all other dirt over it.

Just rinsing in water should suffice, but again make sure it is clean water you are using. As you can see, if doesnt take much to look after a reel, and if you do you will keep it performing like it did when you first got it.

If you ever have a reel stop working while you are trying to retrieve a fish, perhaps its time to look into the maintenance of your reel.

Striped Bass Fishing

Bass fishing is very common for many fishermen to take part in. There are so many tournaments across North America that involves bass fishing. This proves that it is a very popular style of fishing and that fishing itself is a very popular sport.

In this article I am going to be talking about striped bass fishing. This fishing style is a little bit different than normal bass fishing so it is important to know the facts about it. Fishing for striped bass is just as fun as fishing for normal bass; it is just a little bit differently.

For starters, the location of these types of fish are scattered around Canada and the United States. They can be found in both fresh water and salt water. This makes then easy to fish for as they are found in many locations.

The rule of thumb is that in the summer striped bass tend to stay in saltwater. In the winter however, they seem to enjoy freshwater a little bit more. I do not know exactly why but they migrate in the winter.

Generally the best time to fish for these bass is during the early spring and fall. They seem to be the most active at these times of the year.

When it comes to bait selection, the standard seems to work fairly well. Jigs, spoons and crankbaits should get the job done. If possible live bait seems to work the best in my experience but synthetic bait will work just as well. It's up to you on what type of bait you would like to use.

I have found that during the night time and early morning is the best time to go bass fishing. The fish seem to be feeding at these hours the best. You will catch a lot more fish if you go at these times instead of the middle of the day.

Overall you are probably going to have to experiment in order to see what works best for you. Try some of these tips out and see how they work. They may work or they may not. Either way it's a good foundation to start with.

Fishing Adventure in Canada

Recreational fishing is one effective stress reliever. Other than the health benefits offered by low cholesterol fish protein, fishing gives an endorphin-like effect to the fisher which helps improve his mood and relieve stress. A good fisher should know the best place to go to start the adventure. It would also be best if you can find a place of rich resources where you don’t have to wait for a day to catch one fish. Otherwise, you will end up frustrated and stressed. In most temperate climates like in Canada, you can find a suitable place to fish and you can get it easy. Fishing enthusiasts know that the best destinations are the lakes and rivers in Canada.

Canada’s reputation as a renowned site for recreational fishing is incontestable. The country is dotted with thousand of lakes teeming with freshwater fish. Recreational fishing in Canada is regulated though. One has to have a license if he is over sixteen and has to be accompanied by a guide or adult if under sixteen. Professional hobbyists know that securing a license is nothing compared to the fun and thrill of catching salmon to walleye to steel heads, sturgeons, chisel mouths, basses, mullets, trouts, carps, perch, pike and a lot more.

A good number of lakes and rivers in Canada are perfect for recreational fishing like Lake Superior in Ontario. It is considered the largest lake on the place. Though it is a little bit saturated with commercial fishers, it will not hurt to try how great it is. Another lake is Huron which is perfect for enthusiasts who want to spend longer days fishing. There are communities in the area which offer services like rentals and guides. This place is also known for angler fishing. There is also the famous Lake Erie which is considered to be most productive because of its warm water. It is also known for its walleye fish. It’s also hard to forget about the smallest of the lakes, Lake Ontario, that seldom freezes during winter because of its depth.

If you are not going “big time”, Lake Nipigon is just located north of Lake Superior. It’s as perfect as the “big four” of the lakes. As the list of lakes continues, you can find choices like Lake Simcoe in Southern Ontario, Lake Sinclair, Great Slave Lake, Lake Okanagan, Lake Winnipeg, Lake Louise, Shuswap Lake, Mackenzie Lake and the Lake of the Woods. Of course, there are others to choose from. You can also choose to be in small rivers and ponds which are suitable for picnic and camping. Whichever place appeals to you, it is always worthwhile to try one in Canada.
