How to Choose a Lowrance Fish Finder

When shopping online for discount marine electronics, such as a Lowrance fish finder, it helps a lot to understand a bit about the technology you are shopping for. Here is a quick explanation of some of the terms you will encounter.

Cone Angle

First of all, fishfinders use sonar to probe the depths of the sea or lake bed and determine a picture of what lies beneath the water. When you shine a flashlight into the darkness, the light fans out creating a cone that is narrow at the source and wider at the distant end. Electronics does the same thing. The Cone Angle refers to the spread of the beam at the distant end, so a 90 degree beam offers more coverage than a 20 degree beam. Multi-beam systems, as the name implies, send out more than one sonar beam, cumulatively offering a much wider field of view. The Lowrance HDS-7 Fishfinder and GPS Chartplotter series offer a stunning 120 degree view with superior clarity and magnificent detail.

Frequency

The frequency of the sonar signal is measured in KHz. In general the lower the fish finder’s frequency the deeper the signal can penetrate beneath the surface. For very deep waters 50 KHz will give you deep penetration using a relatively narrow cone angle. Much higher frequencies tend to have wider cone angles and do not penetrate the water to the same degree. Equipment operating at a frequency of 200 KHz is well suited to covering a wide area in a shallow lake and can result in a more finely detailed picture of what lies below the surface. Frequency is usually adjustable and dual frequency options are common.

Fish Targets

When the sonar beam encounters an object it returns a signal to the fish finder. The sensitive electronics in the unit analyze the characteristics of the signals returned and are able to distinguish between marine life and other objects. Fish targets are typically represented as a fish symbol on your unit’s screen.

Thermoclines

A thermocline describes a layer of water that is at a different temperature from the waters around it. Thermoclines form rapidly in response to changing conditions or they can be a permanent feature of a certain ocean area. Lowrance fish finders represent thermoclines as lines on the display.

Transducer

The transducer is the powerhouse of the fish finder. It controls the frequency of the sonar beam and sends and receives the signals that are interpreted by the equipment into graphical representations. Three important things to know about the transducer are how it mounts on the boat, what frequencies it supports and the cone angle it produces. Transducers commonly mount on the transom, or hull, out of the way of the motor. Transom-mounts are the most common and easiest to install. Some models with high frequency capable transducers may need to be mounted through the hull, which can be a complicated installation requiring a hole to be cut on the hull. The Lowrance HDS-7 Fishfinder and GPS Chartplotter series and the Lowrance HDS-5X fishfinder series come with your choice of 83/200 KHz or 50/200—KHz transducers.

Display Screen

All the detail in the world is not worth much if you can’t see it! Many fish finders use LCD color displays. Generally the larger the number of pixels, the better the quality of the display. Grayscale displays use shades of gray to distinguish between natural and artificial structures, the lake bottom and the type or size of the fish. CRT displays come at a higher price but offer higher resolutions and better display quality.

Lowrance makes a full range of fishfinders, FF/GPS/Chartplotter combos and offers a full range of other marine electronics for boating professionals and enthusiasts.

Fly Fishing Tackle Bags: Make The Right Choice

When purchasing fly fishing tackle bags it’s important select one that will meet your needs and requirements. Having the right equipment can mean the difference between a successful fishing trip and a disaster! So it’s recommended you select the right equipment first time to ensure your comfort, enjoyment and good overall results.

The main features that should be considered are:

Browse Fly Fishing Bags

Weight

The weight of your tackle bag should be a very important factor when selecting the right bag, especially if you need to walk a fair distance to your final destination. Keep in mind that you will also be filling your bag with equipment, tackle, lures, bait and perhaps even lunch. The last thing you want is to be carrying extra weight over a long distance.

Size & Ease Of Transportation

The size of your bag can be a major factor when transporting your bag from destination to destination. Awkward or large bags can be a real dampener when trying to get to your favorite fishing spot. So it’s best to select a bag size you will be comfortable carrying. Fly fishing tackle bags with shoulder straps or padded carry handles can make transportation a lot easier.

Waterproofing

It is also important to note what you will be carrying in your bag. Will your items need to be kept dry, e.g. digital camera etc? It is possible that the need for a waterproof pocket or compartment could be handy in certain situations so keep it in mind before you purchase.

Easy Access

Another really crucial feature your bag must have is easy access to your equipment. The pocket design of your bag is an important consideration. What will the pockets be able to hold? Does the pocket design allow for easy access to your most frequently used equipment? Do you want zippers or Velcro? These are all really crucial questions to answer before making a final selection.

Durability

While you’re out on your fishing trip you may experience some tough terrain, rocks or thick bush so the durability of your tackle bag would be essential in this case. You can get particular bags with abrasion proof lining that will limit scratching, tearing and holes from prolonged use so keep an eye out for this feature. Obviously if you’re going to fish in easily accessible areas then it’s probably not much of a concern.

Additional Extras

Some bags come with little extras like tackle boxes, lures or even additional tackle. Be aware though that usually this equipment is for beginners. Internal coolers can be a great add on for all day/ weekend trips but consider the extra weight you will be carrying around.

Manufacturer’s Warranty

Finding a bag with a manufacturer’s warranty can also be a benefit, especially for expensive bags so it’s worth considering.

Browse Fly Fishing Bags

So you can see that there are many things to think about when selecting the right fly fishing tackle bag. But don’t let the above overwhelm you. Whether you’re a beginner or an expert, there will be a bag out there to suit your requirements and price range. Best of luck and good fishing!

Trout Fishing Tips, How to catch trout in Spring / How to catch trout in Summer / How to Catch Trout in Fall

Fishing in Northern Ontario can be one of life’s great experiences. I have been fortunate enough in my life to have fished these trout waters for many years. I would like to share with you some of my experiences and trout fishing tips for catching what I believe is one of our greatest natural resources.

Although trout fishing may have its up’s and downs with its own set of difficulties depending on the season. Make no mistake you can be very successful when fishing for trout in any season as long as you have the right technique and the right equipment.

Top Choice For Trout Fishing Gear:
Let’s start with our trout fishing gear, I prefer a strong 7 to 8 foot light action rod with 6 pound test or less. Normally my configuration looks something like this I will use 4-6 pound test line as I mentioned earlier but combine that with a Fluorocarbon Leader. I attach my leader to the main line using a double uni knot, I will attach the lure to the leader using at simple clinch knot I’ve used since childhood that has never let me down.  I always love my first trout fishing trip of the year usually in early May just after ice out normally to the Algonquin Park region. The trout at this time of year are easily caught closer to the surface by slow trolling with small spoons spinners or even plastics. Some of my favourite and most productive trout lure colours for spring trout fishing or trout fishing in any season for that matter would be of course the classic silver and blue this would include size range 0 or 1 Little Cleo spoons, the smallest Mepps Spinners I can never forget Williams Wobbler or the unstoppable EGB spoons of course. The brass and black stripped EGB are Algonquin Legends in my books and overall tough to beat. If I could only bring one this would be it hands down.

Regardless of the time of year there is one trout fishing tip to remember if you take anything away from this site smaller is better (at least in trout fishing that is). when it comes to trout fishing tips smaller lures equals more fish / lighter line equals more fish / lighter action rods equals more fish can you see the common denominator here.

Overkill your equipment and say goodbye to a successful fishing trip.
I see this time and time a gain year after year while fishing these waters. I see these individuals who travel to Northern Ontario in search of our great trout fishing waters and the trophy fish to be had however most will leave empty handed due to over sized equipment and quite simply lack of experience fishing in the area. I have landed very large trout using very small tackle light line and light action rods. This not only makes the experience much more enjoyable but I also believe that fishing is a sport after all and nothing is quite as exhilarating as landing your trophy with light equipment and barbless hooks.

Yes I said barbless hooks, not only will this do less harm to the fish that you do not intend to keep it also adds to the excitement of landing that much desired trout. Keeping tension on the line is the key to this style of fishing as long as you keep tension on the rod I promise you will not lose anything.

A quality Rubber Net or Mesh Trout Net will also help you land more trout and protect the fish you intend to put back. Trout are very sensitive to human contact while touching them without a proper Fishing Glove at the time seems harmless however by physically touching the trout the oils in our skin remove the protective coating allowing bacteria to enter the trout in most cases eventually causing the death of the fish.

Where And When To Fish For Trout:
Let’s tackle this question season by season and began with spring time. Springtime in Northern Ontario signifies at least for me the start of a brand new trout season and thus brings with it my planning of our traditional spring trout fishing trip. The spring time is great for both experienced and novice trout fishermen alike. This also allows for a variety of tactics to be used when chasing the ever elusive trout. Unlike Lake Trout Brook Trout require the presence of bottom spring fed stream or lake beds for their eggs to hatch and survive. Brookies can be found throughout the season in these spring fed streams that keep the water temperatures low.

Spring Just After Ice Out (May & June)
Brook Trout can be taken in a variety of areas at this time of year. Rivers or streams can be very productive although keep an eye out for suckers (a fish that will gather at the mouth of rivers and streams where they enter the lake) their eggs will supply the Brookies with an abundant food source which sometimes requires you to travel further upstream. The reason for this is that the further upstream you travel the farther from the abundant food source the brook trout will be upping your chances of a successful catch. Investing in a pair of decent ChestWaders can often make the difference between success or going home empty handed when fishing these types of Rivers.

Both Lake Trout and Brook Trout can be caught out in the open lake waters by trolling shorelines and over underwater shoals throughout the lake. There is no need to go deep as fish will be holding between the surface and 10 to 20 feet below. Speed is also a critical factor in successful trout fishing. Many an angler has made the fatal mistake of trolling too fast, really the maximum speed should be just enough to create action in your lure oftentimes this speed will be one MPH or less. A canoe is a great vehicle for trout fishing these waters although motors make the task easier just be aware of your speed and allow your lure to soak every five minutes or so (meaning put the motor in neutral for approximately 30 seconds) letting your lure slow and flutter down. Also avoid trolling in a straight line instead opt for long S style turns. This allows your lure to increase and decrease speed triggering strikes.

Also check out the shoreline terrain as often times the landscape you see on shore will continue out and under the waters you are fishing. A great example of this is rock formations or cliffs along the shore this will often mean deep water as the cliffs will normally extend far below the waterline.

Summer Trout Tactics
Summer can be downright frustrating to an angler who is not a custom to fishing these conditions. Many believe to catch trout in the summer months the use of down riggers or long wire line is absolutely necessary but in fact could not be further from the truth besides all that heavy equipment will be working against you. During the summer months to effectively catch trout be it Brook Trout, Lake Trout or Rainbows for that matter I recommend using a……..  Check out my blog listed at the bottom for all the details icluding:

Tips to choose the right Fly Fishing Line

Hobbies are our leisure time activities. It shows how usefully we spend our time. Each and everyone will have different kinds of hobbies like gardening, stamp collection, reading books, listening music, fishing and so on. Fishing is one of the interesting and money saving hobby. Why I say it as money saving is we can either sell the fish and make money or at least we can save the money by using the fish we caught rather than buying from shops.

There are some tips and tricks to be followed by the people who go fly fishing or for first time  fishing beginners to make it a successful fishing trip. There are many factors that decide successful fishing like weight of the rod, fishing line, and so on. The first factor is the weight of the flying. Before choosing the weight you should decide factors like where do you want to go for fishing, what size of fish you want to catch, etc., |If you want to go for fishing in the salty seas that is if you want to catch a big fish then you should choose a fishing line of at least weight 9. If you want to go for just indoor fishing then fishing line of weight 3 is enough. Even if you have a good fishing rod your fishing will not be successful if you do not have a proper fishing line.

There are different types of fishing tackle when it comple to line like double taper, forward line, shooting taper etc., Double taper fishing line is for roll casting and the forward fishing line is for the longer coast. Shooting taper fishing line is used for the places where the flow of water is much faster. The next factor is the color of the rod you are going to use for fishing. Some bright colors will have the capability of attracting the fishes towards it.

There are two types of flying dry flying and wet flying. In dry flying it floats above the water surface while in wet flying is submerged in the water. There is a bob in some flying which gives the look of an insect that is hovering. So this will also attract the fishes towards the flying. Hence depending upon your fishing needs you can choose the fishing lines. After catching a big fish you need to put it on your boat or in your basket. Only if the rod is of less weight it will be easy for you to lift.

Are you a bass fishing enthusiast?

What is it during bass fishing that everybody are obsessed on to engage on such activity? People get keen on  bass fishing that is why every trend that they take notice of about it really catches their interests and as often as feasible get into it.

“Where are the what…? Where are the bass!” How many of the anglers (tournament and recreational) look at a better part of water you have not at all fished before, release the craft in the water, after that, ask this question toward yourself? This is probably certainly one of the most important topics in the field of bass fishing that an angler should discover more about. At this time you will be getting information on how to find  places best meant for bass fishing.
Locating bass as well as understanding the water will be the number one inquiry surrounded by bass anglers today. The following largely inquired question could be is which baits they should use on the way to hook a “big” bass. Currently once you consider it, you will find in fact only two (2) main topics that go hand-in-hand with regards to bass fishing. When you understood more regarding these two, you’d unquestionably develop into a a lot better angler, and they are:

1. Knowing the way to locate bass.

2. Knowing how to hook bass using all the various tactics, presentations, and baits. Education how to locate bass could be to some extent of a challenge to the majority anglers since there are so many different factors that should be determined for example:

1. Knowing the way to read a map – this is the elemental expertise that it is best to try to learn because through a map it is less complicated for you to take on the suitable place good quality for bass fishing.

2. Knowing essentially the most practical places to discover Active Bass just following cold fronts and during early spring and late fall periods – climate condition must be particularly regarded as well.

3. Understanding water depth- this is an important aspect because the deepness or the cavity within the water will function an element so that you can identify if it is an effective location.

4. Water clarity- per chance a lot easier so that you can at this point have your bass fishing if you are well-oriented about the water clarity of the location.

5. Water temperatures

6. Cyclic patterns- this is often in relation while using pattern no matter if bass fishing is seasonal or not.

7. Finding structure areas

8. Finding vegetation spots Nevertheless there is certainly more! Being a consistent bass angler is a whole lot more than just stepping into your boat, hitting the water, and casting your baits. That’s why bass tournaments are so competitive as well as thrilling, because the further you learn about tracking down bass the faster you can start catching them right? And hey, isn’t that partially the battle?

Let’s start by taking a look at a lake map. There are 2 universal types of lake maps that most anglers will make use of that happen to be referred to as the; “Hot Spot” in addition to “Topographical” maps. The differences between both is that a “Topo” chart reveals added detail, as well as “Hot Spots” map shows other fishing spots (well, at least they’re supposed to).

The secret (or key) in knowledge how to implement a lake map would be to sector the map. What did you say? I mean through this is that I will acquire the map and look at carefully it for a moment (looking for spots everywhere the fish would most probably be.) Next, I will (using a highlighter) divide the map in sections according to just how much time I have to pre-fish for just a competition or else the number of days I have to merely fish the body of water meant for amusement.

The dimension among the sections will differ depending on contours, structure, and what percentage places I may want to take a look at over the route of the day according to what the map shows me. I’m by no means one to just cast bait into the water in addition to work it for five minutes after that leave; I will experiment with an mixture of baits if I observe signs of fish during any particular part to test to establish a effective pattern. At this time are a few important fundamentals which you could usually discover when it comes to uncovering bass on any given body of water:

1. Vegetation areas

2. Jagged contours

3. Shallow water close to deep water areas

4. Points and peak drops

5. Different sorts of structure

The Importance of CE-mærkning af bade for the Safe Marketing of Boats

Products before they are launched in the market have to undergo a test to examine their quality. Brands are granted certification of quality for their products when the products are found to have ce-mærkning af bade. The same is true about motor engine boats. CE marking is a legal certification that is granted to a product only if the product is found to be in adherence with the European Union consumer safety norms. This sort of product certification is a requirement for as many as thirty one countries.

The full form of CE is Conformit European meaning European Conformity. Many products that have not successfully passed EU standards are found to be marked with fake ce-mærkning af bade. The objective of these fake CE markings is to befool consumers who are not in the know of the importance of this marking. Keep your eyes open to check the details of ce-mærkning af båd while selecting a motor boat. The fake logos are meant to misguide consumers about the quality of products.

The original CE mark logos are about five mm in height. But, the fake logos are relatively big. They are simple stickers pasted on the product. The space between the letters is also important to consider. The letters of the fake logos have little space in between them. A boat with ce-mærkning af bade is the only consideration for purchase. Checking the quality of a product and the authenticity of its logo is critical to making a right purchase. CE marking service is a method to be sure about the authenticity and quality of motor boats. CE marking service to check the ce-mærkning af bad, entails some paperwork.

The CE marking service requires you to submit certain information and documents in specific formats about the product to the authorized bodies. Once the documents are submitted, they will be reviewed. Based on the documents, the quality of the products will be compared to the norms of the standards that the EU has set up. This is the primary stage of the quality testing procedure to acquire a ce-mærkning af bade certification. If everything about the product is found to be ok, the circulation of the product throughout the thirty one countries is done.

If you market your products with fake CE mark logo, you can suffer imprisonment or fines. Withdrawal of the product from the market is also possible. So, make sure to ensure the quality standards of ce-mærkning af bad

The 3 Best Methods to Learn Bass Fishing

1. Books: There have many books written about bass fishing. Some are very introductory and others go into very specific detail teaching all of the many variables involved in Bass Fishing. I like to find several books that focus on one specific area and study it thoroughly. For example, I will read a book about using floating top water plugs. I will absorb the information and then I will select another book that focuses on another method. In this example it will be a book about methods for using crankbaits for suspended fish. you can keep reading the books on each and every tactic that you can find. You will not remember all of the material in the books but you will remember quite a bit, thus making you a well rounded fisherman that will be prepared to catch fish in any conditions.

2. Magazines: There countless magazines out there in circulation that focus on Bass Fishing. There are several advantages to these magazine subscriptions. For one, most publications will generally have a resident pros offering advice with a specific approach to Bass Fishing. Imagine having that pro offering up tips every month. Also, the magazines will have product reviews. I really like this! If a particular rod can handle the trials and tribulations that a pro bass fisherman throws at it, chances are it will hold up to what I put it through. Generally there will also be several fishing reports based on the lunar cycle to help you pinpoint the peek time to land the bucket mouths.

3. Videos: In addition to learning all of the basic, intermediate, and advanced Bass Fishing techniques, videos will allow you to see them in action! This is the thing that helped me the most. Some of the times the techniques outlined in print are easy and straight forward. Other times this is not the case. Videos on Bass Fishing will let you see exactly how to perform some of these techniques in action rather than just still shots. I found this most helpful when I was learning a lot of the advanced casting techniques. The methods just did not make since on the page when I read the steps. It definitely helped ease the learning curve once I could see these techniques step by step on the screen. It also helped that I could rewind as often as I needed to!

Fishing For Largemouth Bass - Have You Considered These Things Before You Go Fishing For Largemouth Bass?

When fishing for largemouth bass there are certain things you should consider. For starters it’s intelligent to choose what time of the day you should go. Considering that each fish comes out at different times, you have to be familiar with when the largemouth bass comes out the most to get its food. If you didn’t already know, largemouth bass fish are typically found in fresh water and they are present in most states. They can be found in lakes, ponds, seas and even very small ponds. These particular fish don’t have eye lids so they tend to stay away from the sun. This is a very important thing to remember when fishing for largemouth bass because you will need to go fishing when it’s not as sunny out.

They are most commonly found during the early morning hours and again in the late afternoon/early evening. This is when they feed the most as the sun is likely to be far lower and they are still able to see well enough to catch their prey. While fishing for largemouth bass may seem hard, it’s actually pretty simple if you do your research. Aside from the fact that they tend to come out in the morning or evening, they can be found during the day but are usually hiding behind rocks, structures under water, and even behind any material that may be down there. This is important to know because if you use a crank-bait to suspend in the shadows under the water, you have a far better chance of catching some largemouth bass.

How To Catch Largemouth Bass

So now we’ve got the time and the reason why these fish don’t emerge during the daylight as often. Now how can you catch these suckers? Well, for one thing you can use a crank-bait and suspend it deep into the waters like we discussed earlier Another way is to use a frog pattern on top of a lily pad so the bass will grab it thinking it’s a frog. These fantastic fish like to sit and watch their prey before going after it, so for that reason, you may want to try using a spinner-bait. These are lures that have metal blades which propel when they hit the water. They appear to mimic a small fish and are very eye catching to the bass. These are just a few ways to get comfortable fishing for largemouth bass. The most important thing to consider is lure and time of day.

Finding Best Fishing Waders for You

Do some thinking before you buy a pair of fishing waders. Are you buying them just for fishing or you will use them when you duck hunt as well?

If you intend to do fishing more than you will be hunting, in that case, the type of wader together with the thickness and color of the wader will be of the essence.

You also need to think about the type of fishing you will do. Obviously, if you are fishing from a boat, you don’t need any waders. What the temperature of the water is going to be the largest part of the time when you wear waders? It’s better to be a little warm on a hot summer day than very cold on a chilly one.

There are more than a few types of materials waders are made, which gives you more options to pick out.

Neoprene is perhaps one of the most widespread wader materials. It is incredibly durable; it can survive a fair amount of abuse. It is available in different thickness and colors.  You can select from the more traditional green to dark brown, blue and even camouflaged. However, color does not make a difference. It is your own liking that counts.

Breathable waders have become very popular over the last several years. In some cases they are completely replacing the Neoprene waders.

Breathable waders are made from a permeable membrane such as Gore-Texâ. This means that moisture can escape through the wader even in the water. Another huge benefit of the breathable wader is the fact that you can wear it in the hot summer days and sweat won’t be a problem.

In addition, you can wear it in the freezing winter days with warm clothing underneath and stay dry and warm in the water.

If you are a novice fly fisherman, nylon waders are also a good choice. They are much better option than the rubber waders that most beginners use. These waders are lightweight, keep you warm and dry, but there is one big problem – they can get hot since they are not breathable.

Hypothermia is another problem because of the extreme cold in the winter days or even in the summer when standing in a very cold mountain stream for long time.

Rubber waders are still an option, but they are becoming less popular because the cost of the Neoprene and the breathable waders is no longer high. However, the price can be appealing to people on a tight budget. Rubber waders have three main disadvantages: they are not breathable,

there is no flexibility, and they usually weigh more than the other types of waders. You should always wear a belt with rubber waders. Belts are considered necessary for all the waders, but especially for the rubber ones.

Besides the type of material you want your waders to be, the fit of the wader is another factor to think about when buying them. Keeping dry and warm is a vital aspect with waders, but having them fit nicely must be second on the list.

When you wear ill-fitting waders, you will be uncomfortable as well as tiring easily. This could cause a wading accident. In addition, ill-fitting waders will limit your movements while climbing in or out of the boat or trying to climb rocks. All these problems can contribute to a wading
accident or a fall causing injury to your body or equipment damage.

Do not buy waders that fit too tight. They need to be loose enough to layer clothing during cold winter days. Also, during a 1-mile walk to your fishing location, you won’t be struggling with your waders.

Finding the right fit on the Internet could be a little more challenging. Send an email to an online store giving them your height, weight and shoe size and they should be able to fit well. If you visit the nearest fishing shop, you can try them on. Do not forget to do a few knee bends and walk around in them. See if you can put your foot on a stool while wearing them?  Double-check the length of the waders. You don’t need waders that are too long for the reason that you will have folds, which will rub and wear out causing leaks.

When it comes to the boot and sole selection, consider what the waders will be used for.  In what type of weather conditions will the waders spend most of their time? If you plan to spend most of your time in cold weather and water, the best option are the boot foot waders. They offer the best protection during cold winter days and you won’t have to fret about sand and gravel getting into your boots. The built in boots are very easy to put on and take off, they have no laces and are low maintenance.

The stocking feet waders are one of the most popular waders. They weight less than the boot foot wader does and you can wear different soled boot for various terrains. They have a neoprene sock attached to the bottom of the wader.

When purchasing boots for these fishing waders, buy lugged sole boots for fishing in muddy-bottomed water and felt soles on rock or gravel-bottomed waters.

We recommend that you buy a good name brand. You need to keep in mind that there is no guarantee that your brand new waders won’t leak. Bit if you get your waders from a reputable manufacturer, they will stand behind their product.

Also, cold feet forces people to stop fishing. This is sad because it really is not necessary with heated boot insoles. With them, you can fish all day even in very cold waters.

Best Saltwater Fly Rod, What is the Best Fly Rod for Saltwater?

Choosing the “Best Saltwater Fly Rod” is like picking out the best eating utensil.  A different tool will be needed for different situations.  These situations vary widely so there is a wide range of saltwater fly rods that will be better at times than others.  Size of fish is the biggest variable, but there are others that you will want to take into account before you invest in a saltwater fly rod.  At the bottom of this article is a link that will take you to a site where you can get recommended brands and models of the best saltwater fly rods.

What is difference between a Saltwater Fly Rod and Freshwater Fly Rod?

Before you choose what will be the best saltwater fly rod for your adventures, it is good to know the differences between a saltwater fly rod and a freshwater (standard) fly rod.  First of all, both will work in either situation as long as it is designed for the size of fish you are after.  One thing that is for sure is that you do not want to be under rodded ever, especially when saltwater fly fishing.  Typically, pound for pound, saltwater fish fight much harder than freshwater fish.  I have caught 2 pound saltwater fish that fought as hard as a 10 pound Rainbow Trout.  So when in doubt, go with a heavier weight rod.

Fast Action

One critical factor when choosing a rod that will be best for saltwater is to makes sure it is a “Fast Action” rod.  Basically this means that the fly rod will be quite stiff and will therefore deliver a lot of power.  This will also mean a tired shoulder at the end of the day, but there are many reasons for fast action rods.  Here are a few:

Wind: saltwater fly rods are built to combat the wind that is almost always prevalent when fishing in saltwater.

Distance: Fast action rods will deliver the most power to the line resulting in a further cast than with softer rods.

Flies: In most saltwater fly fishing situations, you will not be casting small bugs to rising fish.  Usually you will be casting heavy, wind catching bait fish imitations that are hard to cast.  That is when a stiff, fast action rod will help you pick that fly up out of the water and then cast it out a long ways.  With a soft rod, you will struggle to get it out of the water without stripping in a bunch of line, and then try to cast it!

Line:  A common scenario when saltwater fly fishing is using sink tips to get the fly to the fish.  Sinking line is much harder to cast than floating, therefore the fast action.

You are probably thinking these aspects are what you would like in a freshwater rod.  And yes, most saltwater rods make great freshwater rods for big fish.  Unfortunately many freshwater rods are not designed for what you will be faced with in the saltwater.

Fish Size

The best saltwater fly rod is determined by the size of fish you are after.  As mentioned earlier, saltwater fish tend to fight with a vengeance.  Therefore it is wise to go with a heavier weight rod.  For the most part, an 8wt (weight) is probably about as low as you will go.  Here is a generic list of some fish and the rod weight you will want to have:

8wt: Sierra Mackerel, Bonefish, Snook, Trout, Steelhead

10wt: Bonefish, Permit, Roosterfish, Dorado, Snook, Redfish, Salmon

12wt: Roosterfish, Dorado, Barracuda, Tuna, Sailfish

14wt: Tarpon, Sailfish, Marlin, Shark

Quality

In order for a rod to be the best saltwater fly rod, it must be good quality.  Just as important though, it must fit into your budget.  As quality goes up, price is right in front of it.  There are two things that I suggest for all rods when it comes to quality and price:

  1. Go with the best fly rod you can afford.
  2. Stick with the rods that offer an unconditional lifetime warranty.  For the most part, you will have to spend at least $200 to get a rod with a lifetime warranty, but trust me, it is worth it.  We all break rods sooner than later, so you might as well make this an investment for a life time.  Plus, you will regret buying anything less the quality of rod that is warranted, especially when casting to fish in saltwater.  All the rod makers that I suggest are very good with their warranties, and some even offer programs where you have a new rod in as little as a few days after a break.

Fly Line for Saltwater

It is not really crucial to have a specific line made for saltwater, although you will want to be ready for all situations.  That is why I recommend a fly line with interchangeable tips.  This way you can adapt and fish floating line if need be, or switch to one of many sink tips designed to sink at different rates.  Follow the link below and click on “Fly Lines” to get my specific recommendation on certain brands.

Conclusion:

There are many good fly rods to choose form, but an investment of this stature requires more than good, you want the best.  To get recommendations on the best saltwater fly rod, go to www.OnlineFlyFishingGuide.com/Best Saltwater Fly Rod and click on “Fly Rods” where we talk more about brands and models.  To see our recommendation on the best saltwater fly rod and other fly fishing gear click here: www.OnlineFlyFishingGuide.com/OnlineFlyFishingGearGuide
